The Honda GL400 is a model based on the Honda CX series that was launched in 1978.As usual Honda was keen on breaking new ground by using new and uncommon technology for the time such as a water cooled V engine that uses a shaft to drive a ‘comstar’ type wheel. The first ever motorcycle wheel to be tubeless. Although there are a lot of interesting facts about this motorcycle, what gets me though is that every time I see a tastefully modified CX or GL I am amazed of how this boxy weird looking machine can be turned into an amazing and exciting motorcycle.
As you can see in the picture above, this GL was acquired by its owner a bit tired, but overall in a good condition
But not good enough to set the foundations for a great scrambler that the owner dreamed of. So after taking everything apart, the engine had a rebuild just to keep everything in prefect working condition. After tackling the engine it was time for the customization to begin.
If you didn’t spotted it yet the rear end was chopped and a new one was fabricated suiting the taste of the owner and giving the GL some proper scrambler lines. Also worth noticing, the rear tail light was delicately placed just under the seat giving it a smooth look with the seat. With it some high mounted fenders where added giving it a more off road oriented purpose, and of course some proper off road tires
With a few coats of fresh paint and a stunning seat that is placed flush to the tail light the GL was looking mint. The customization didn’t stop there though. As aftermarket exhaust’s where fitted, a good-looking toolbox ,a vintage looking headlight along with an aftermarket speedo and new brake fluid reservoir.
To sum things up in my opinion this is a great example of why the GL is such a popular base to the custom world. It doesn’t take a lot for it to shine, and it has a lot of features that make it stand from the crowds.
